The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) is designed to evaluate the short-term aging resistance of bituminous binders. This test simulates the hardening process that occurs during the mixing of binder with aggregates in a plant and the subsequent finishing and rolling of bituminous layers. The RTFO assesses how the binder's properties change under heat and air exposure, providing critical data on its durability and performance. The RTFO test involves subjecting the binder to controlled heat and airflow to simulate aging conditions, preparing samples for further evaluation of their performance characteristics. Application: Determines the resistance of bituminous binder to hardening from heat and air using the Rolling Thin Film Oven Test.

Introduction: Simulates binder hardening during mixing and finishing. Prepares binder samples for mass change and other short-term aging tests.

Apparatus Details:

  1. Rotating Shelf: Vertical metal carriage, 304.8 mm diameter, rotates at 15 ± 0.2 RPM, holds eight glass containers.
  2. Sample Containers: 64 mm ± 1.2 mm diameter, 139.7 mm depth, flat-bottomed, heat-resistant glass.
  3. Thermometer: ASTM 13C, available with calibration traceability (extra cost).
