The Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT) apparatus is used to measure the rate of water absorption on the surface of concrete. This test provides an indicator of the permeability of the concrete surface, which directly relates to its durability. High initial absorption can indicate low durability and higher susceptibility to freeze-thaw cycles, chloride ingress, or carbonation. As per BS 1881: Part 208:1996.


The apparatus consists of:

Water Reservoir

A container holding water to ensure a consistent supply for testing.

Capillary Tube

A graduated capillary tube to measure the flow rate of water. It typically has fine gradations to measure small volumes of water accurately.

Rubber Gasket or Seal

Ensures watertight contact between the apparatus and the concrete surface.

Test Head

A device attached to the concrete surface to create a seal for water flow measurement.

Measuring Unit

A setup to measure the rate of water absorption in units such as mL/m²/s.
