Details
Vicat apparatus will be manufactured as per IS 5513-1996 and will include dashpot to facilitate the gentle lowering of the movable rod. The apparatus will consist of the parts as described below:
[1] A frame
made of cast iron having a movable rod made of brass with a cap made of brass at one end - needle and plunger can be attached at the other end. The needles and plunger will be capable of being fixed centrally into the movable rod by means of clamping screw
[2] Needles
The needles for initial and final setting time will be of hardened and tempered steel. their fitting ends will be of brass. there shall be about 6 mm clearance between the bottom end of the needle, when it is raised, and the top edge of the ring mould, to enable the mould to be located in position without damage to the needle.
[3] Plunger
Plunger will be of polished brass 10 ± 0.05 mm in dia. with a projection of the fitting end for insertion into the movable rod The lower end will be flat. Its length shall be 50 ± 1 mm.
[4] Movable Rod
Movable rod will carry an indicator which moves over a graduated scale attached to the frame. A clearance of 0.25 mm around the movable rod is kept to facilitate free movement. A suitable arrangement will be provided to secure the movable rod in rest position when the apparatus is not in use.
[5] Graduated Scale
Graduated scale will be of 40mm in length and the smallest division of the scale will be 1mm.
[6] Vicat Mould
The Vicat Mould will be in the form of frustum of a cone with an internal dia of 70 (± 0,5mm)at the top, 80 (+/- 0,5mm)at the bottom and height of 40 (± 0,5mm) The mould will have minimum wall thickness of 4mm. A non porous base plate of glass or metal of 3mm thickness will also be provided.

- Standard Weight Box 500gm to 1 mg
- Gauging Trowel
- Split type mould with clamping ring
