DENSIMETRY BATH-(API GRAVITY OF CRUDE PETROLEUM OIL)-(HEATING)-(ASTM D1298, D3142)

Scope:

1. Covers the laboratory determination using a glass hydrometer, of the density, relative density (specific gravity), or API gravity of crude petroleum, petroleum products, or mixtures of petroleum and non‑petroleum products normally handled as liquids, and having a Reid vapor pressure of 14.696 psi (101.325 kPa) or less

Significance & Use:

1. Density, relative density or API gravity is a factor governing the quality and pricing of crude petroleum. Density is an important quality indicator for automotive, aviation and marine fuels, where it affects storage, handling and combustion.

Test Apparatus:

Consists of Glass water bath, Hydrometer cylinders and thermometers. Detailed description is narrated as per following.

 1) Constant temperature water bath:

1. Made of Clear, transparent glass material
2. Dimensions of water-bath: 70 x 35 x 60 cm (W x D x H)
3. Volume of water bath tank: 42 Liters 
4. Tank cover having three holes of 51 mm diameter, which allows three hydrometer cylinders to get inside the bath
5. Tactfully designed Stainless steel clamps will hold all the graduated jars in place.
6. Heating supplied by an armored stainless steel heater placed inside the bath
7. Stainless steel stirrer paddle for uniform temperature distribution throughout the chamber.
8. Temperature range: 35 °C to 100 °C
9. Temperature controller: AUTO‑TUNE PID temperature controller cum indicator 
10. Temperature sensor: PT‑100 Probe
11. Temperature Accuracy: ± 0.5 °C or Better
12. Temperature Resolution: 0.1 °C
13. Heater watts: 4 KW
14. Power supply: 230 Volt, 50 Hz, Single Phase, AC Supply

2)  Hydrometer cylinders:

1. Made of Borosilicate material
2. Transparent glass with uniform thickness and base size.
3. Height: 440 mm
4. Diameter: 50 mm
5. No of cylinders supplied : 03 Nos

3)  Thermometers (At extra cost):

1. Supplied with ASTM 12C ‑ IP 64C thermometer
2. No of thermometer supplied : 01 no

Note:

1. To achieve below room temperature inside the bath, refrigeration system is required, which should be ordered at extra cost.
