Scope:

Covers the laboratory determination using a glass hydrometer, of the density, relative density (specific gravity), or API gravity of crude petroleum, petroleum products, or mixtures of petroleum and non‑petroleum products normally handled as liquids, and having a Reid vapor pressure of 14.696 psi (101.325 kPa) or less

Significance & Use:

Density, relative density or API gravity is a factor governing the quality and pricing of crude petroleum. Density is an important quality indicator for automotive, aviation and marine fuels, where it affects storage, handling and combustion.

Test Apparatus:

Consists of Glass water bath, Hydrometer cylinders and thermometers. Detailed description is narrated as per following.

 1) Constant temperature water bath:

• Made of Clear, transparent glass material
• Dimensions of water-bath  : 70 x 35 x 60 cm (W x D x H)
• Volume of water bath tank  : 42 Liters 
• Tank cover having three holes of 51 mm diameter, which allows three hydrometer cylinders to get inside the bath
• Tactfully designed Stainless steel clamps will hold all the graduated jars in place.
• Heating supplied by an armored stainless steel heater placed inside the bath
• Stainless steel stirrer paddle for uniform temperature distribution throughout the chamber.
• Temperature range      : 35 °C to 100 °C
• Temperature controller   : AUTO‑TUNE PID temperature controller cum indicator 
• Temperature sensor     : PT‑100 Probe

• Transparent glass with uniform thickness and base size.

3)  Thermometers (At extra cost)

• Supplied with ASTM 12C ‑ IP 64C thermometer
• No of thermometer supplied : 01 no

Note:

1. To achieve below room temperature inside the bath, refrigeration system is required, which should be ordered at extra cost.
