The field density test by the water replacement method, as per IS: 2720 Part XXXII, is used to determine the in-situ density of soil, particularly in cases where sand replacement or core cutter methods may not be suitable. The water replacement method involves creating a cavity in the soil and determining the volume of the cavity by measuring the water required to fill it. The field density is calculated by dividing the mass of the soil removed by the volume of the cavity, allowing for accurate density measurements in cohesive and coarse-grained soils.


As per IS:2720 part XXXIII/ASTM D5030/D5030M-21/ISO 11272:2017/BS 1377-9:1990

300 mm dia. The ring will be made from 4 to 8 mm mild steel sheet, either in one unit or in segments. The rings ring will be approx. 100 mm high and horizontal flange will be of 100 mm dia. Stiffening flanges will be provided to resist distortion. Suitable steel spikes to fix the ring on ground for not allowing the ring to move during the test will be provided. Complete with a scrapper of about 300 mm length, 25 mm wide and 3‑5 mm thick with one beveled edge with suitable handle, plastic sheets (at extra cost)of 0,1 mm thickness, 2‑4 meter square, plastic sheet of 0.2 mm thickness, 4‑8 meter square, pointer gauge assembly and supports resting on or outside the ring, with adjustable pointer and lock nut.
